Meridian Arts Ensemble: Monday YouTube Fix

Andrew Hitz

The Meridian Arts Ensemble is one of the most creative brass groups out there and have been for decades.  I am a huge fan of the music of Frank Zappa and it is not easy to pull off without sounding forced.

This is as good as Zappa covers get.

Enjoy!

Deviation from the Norm

Andrew Hitz

“Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.” ― Frank Zappa

Are you in a practicing rut? If so, what can you change to promote progess? More frequent, shorter practice sessions? Starting earler in the day? More basics? More tools like decibel meters and video cameras for additional external feedback?

We all have a tendency to find “what works” and then stick to it. But we must not be scared to change what’s working in exchange for the possibility of a breakthrough.

We can always go back to what we were doing in the first place if our deviation doesn’t bear fruit.

Monday YouTube Fix: Frank Zappa and Steve Vai

Andrew Hitz

This is a whole lot of guitar chops on one stage at one time. Many people know Frank Zappa for his off the wall lyrics and personality and don't realize he was one of the greatest electric guitar players to every strap one on. It takes some serious courage to just get on stage with Steve Vai and Frank doesn't just hold his own on this clip. Love that this is live and they only got one take. Two absolute masters enjoying what was obviously hours and hours of intentional, dedicated practicing.

Enjoy!
